County Commissioners approve Fire/EMS Tax Rate Proposals

For those members who may not be aware, the St. Mary's County Board of County Commissioners approved our request for the Fire/EMS tax increase on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. This is truly a milestone in the history of this department, as we have not requested nor received any additional tax increases in 18 years for Fire, and nearly 13 years for EMS since its inception. The increases will allow us to fund our operational shortfalls, as well as allow us to continue moving forward with more certainty in the planning for our much-needed new Fire/EMS station.

So ends one step in a long, often difficult, sometimes not so pleasant journey that began several years ago with the New Building Committee's vision and proposal. Countless meetings, hours of planning and preparation, public forums, hundreds of emails and phone calls, official correspondence, members taking time off from work, time away from family and loved ones. All of this in addition to running calls, training, meetings, and all of the other necessary duties to keep our organization running efficiently.

But we did it! We persevered, choosing the high road, and sticking to our morals, not getting down in the ditches, even when confronted by our opposition with lies, distortions, and misleading facts in an attempt to discredit us. Hold your heads high ladies and gentlemen, as we stand miles higher than any of them.

I cannot begin to express in words how proud it makes me feel to be a part of this wonderful organization. I don't want to start mentioning names, because I know that I will most likely forget someone. However, I want to sincerely thank from the heart the many members of the Department, the Auxiliary, members of the New Building Committee, Fundraising Committee, as well as the many citizens who supported our efforts in this endeavor.

Additionally, if you get the chance, please make sure to thank Commissioners Tom Jarboe, Todd Morgan, and John O'Conner who supported us and voted in our favor. Many thanks are also in order for Mrs. Jeanette Cudmore, Chief Financial Officer for St. Mary's County, who continuously and patiently assisted us through the process.

There is still much work to do. We are just getting started. Be vigilant, remain enthusiastic, and continue with your dedicated service to this organization whenever and however you can.
Sincerely,
PIO, Mike Roberts
