By Public Information Officer Michael (Mike) Roberts
March 17, 2023

The officers and members of the Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc. are saddened and heartbroken to announce the passing of our current Recording Secretary and Fire Prevention Officer Steven M. King on Thursday, March 16, 2023, following a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Steven was 42 years young, living with his wife Crystal, in Lexington Park, Md. He is survived by his wife Crystal; her children, Austin, Dakota, and Makayla; his father William “Buddy” King, and stepmother Gwen of New Carrollton, MD; brother Anthony King of North Beach, MD; brother William “Curtis” King of Lexington Park, MD; nephews and great-nieces and nephews, Steven is preceded in death by his mother, Debora J. King (Cox) in June of 2000.
Steven was born on January 12, 1981 in Washington DC. At an early age Steven loved fire trucks, and wanted to be a firefighter just like his dad. Steven pursued his dream and joined as a volunteer at the age of 16. Throughout the years, Steven continued to follow his dream and moved up within the ranks. He became an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), served in multiple line officer positions, and administrative titles including President.
Steven used his firefighting skills to catch his flame Crystal, where they joined together and moved to Southern Maryland. They joined the Second District VFD&RS to serve their community together. Steven was elected as Secretary in 2021 and served up to his passing. He was awarded the Public Education Award for his dedication and service in Fire Prevention. Steven could always be seen working with the kids through fire prevention or being Santa Claus during the holiday season.
Steven loved to train the younger members and help in any way possible. His lasting dedication will continue through the years.
The family will receive friends at the Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, 45245 Drayden Rd., Valley Lee, MD on Thursday, 3/23/2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, and 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
