On the afternoon of Sunday, February 25, 2024, the SDVFD&RS responded to a report of a serious vehicle accident with entrapment on Flat Iron Road in the vicinity of Guenther Drive in Great Mills. Due to information being received by St. Mary’s County Emergency Communications, Squad 3 from Bay District VFD, Lexington Park VRS, Medic Unit, and the Medical Duty Officer were also dispatched.
Safety 6 (Raley) arrived on the scene to locate a single vehicle that had rolled several times and cut off a pole, with one occupant still inside. Chief 6B (Alvey) arrived and established the Flat Iron Road Command. Squad 6 with Captain 6 (Henderson) arrived and began stabilization and extrication efforts. Due to a pole and wires in the road, the crew of Squad 6 needed to hand carry tools and equipment for longer than normal distances to reach the vehicle. Captain 6 (Henderson) was the Rescue Group Supervisor. Squad 3 (BDVFD) assisted with the extrication effort. Emergency medical services personnel from SDVFD&RS, LPVRS, and the Department of Emergency Services provided medical care to the patient. Chief 3 (Gould) and Chief 9B (Marconi) assisted with command-and-control duties.
Due to mechanism, it was decided to transport the patient to a trauma center. LPVRS Ambulance 397 land transported the patient to the landing zone located at King’s Christian Academy. MSP Trooper 7 transported the patient to Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo; MD. Engine 61 handled the LZ.
