The Second District VFD&RS, Inc. asks that you please join them and fire departments throughout the country in celebrating the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation “Light the Night” to honor firefighters killed in the line of duty by displaying a red light on an outdoor light on your home throughout the night from May 1st through May 5th as a show of respect for those brave firefighters who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting others from the ravages of fire. The United States Fire Administration reports that 80 firefighters were killed in the line of duty in the United States during the year 2023. Several multiple-fatality incidents serve as a constant reminder of not only how dangerous the job of a firefighter is, but also how important it is for all of us to actually learn the lessons from these terrible tragedies. Those fallen firefighters, including local Firefighter/EMT Brice Trossbach of the Naval District Washington Fire & Emergency Services Division at Patuxent River, MD, who lost his life on June 27, 2023, while fighting a dwelling fire near Leonardtown, will be honored at the Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service on Sunday, May 5, 2024 in Emmitsburg, MD.
