| The Officers and members of the Second District VFD&RS are incredibly proud to announce that Charles “Redtop” Henderson has been selected Firefighter of the Year 2024 by the Maryland State Firefighters Association, the highest individual honor awarded across the entire state of Maryland!
This prestigious recognition was presented at the 2025 MSFA Convention held in Ocean City in June, and celebrates one outstanding firefighter whose dedication, service, and impact have made a lasting difference. This year, that person is our very own Redtop.
Redtop’s journey began in 1970 when he joined SDVFDRS as a 16-year-old Junior Member. Over the past 50+ years, he has built a legacy of service, leadership, and passion. He served in nearly every operational and administrative role: Chief (6 years), Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, Chief Engineer, Engineer, Board Member, Water and Supply Officer.
He has also served as a longtime SMVFA Delegate and active on numerous vital committees, including Apparatus Review and Facilities Management and is a consistent top responder. From FF1 to Hazmat Technician to Incident Commander and more, Redtop never stopped learning and leading by example. In 2019, Redtop was inducted into the Southern Maryland Volunteer Fireman’s Association and has received numerous operational and life saving awards.
Redtop embodies everything this award stands for, commitment, courage, and community. We are beyond proud and grateful for his decades of selfless service.
Congratulations, Redtop! |
