| On Sunday, November 16, just after 11:00 AM, units from Second District Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad were dispatched to a structure fire in the 21000 block of Chancellor's Run Road, in Lexington Park. Chief 6 arrived immediately after the first engine, establishing command at the scene. Recognizing the heavy fire conditions, the initial decision was made to establish a defensive strategy. This safety-first approach means crews battle the fire from the outside of the structure to prevent it from spreading and to protect personnel, as the building was too dangerous to enter. Command was later transferred to Chief 7A as more units arrived. Engine-Tanker 63 as the fourth due engine (with four personnel) and Squad 6 as the second due Squad (with five personnel) were assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). This is a dedicated crew that stands by, fully equipped and ready to immediately rescue a firefighter if they become lost, trapped, or injured. After a determined effort, the fire was successfully brought under control. Once the structure was deemed safe, crews were able to enter the building to perform overhaul—the process of checking for and extinguishing any hidden fires within walls or ceilings to ensure the fire was completely out. Units assisted with scene clean-up before returning to service. |
